From the recording Little Book

When you’re lonely, the basic need for human interaction can make any interaction that actually does happen feel way more intense. If someone is kind and smiles or says something nice, it can feel like pure love, and if someone is rude or nasty it can feel disproportionately terrible.

As life goes on, it becomes easier to have an empathetic response to a person’s nasty behavior — they must have some disharmony going on that’s causing them to act that way.

We wrote this song to capture that perspective, and in the time since writing it, there have been a couple times when the song served as a reminder to live up to that ideal.

Lyrics

Pseudo-polite but nothing nice to say
Compliments in a backhanded way
Passive aggression, asserted pride
Hide the anguish felt inside

Outside, you’d never know
Outside, you’d never know

A jealous joy-seizer
An I'm-just-joking teaser
Seeking love but hindered by pride
A fluffy teddy bear inside, but

Outside, you’d never know
Outside, you’d never know

Sit down by my side
There's no need to hide
I’ll stay, see you through ``
Just let yourself (be you)
Let yourself be

For now...
I’ll just grin at the jokes you crack
and let the comments roll down my back
Give all my love, amplified
at peace with how I feel inside, hoping

Inside, you really know
Inside, you really know
